The Importance of Propeller Selection

A well-chosen prop ensures that your boat can achieve optimal speed, maneuverability, and fuel efficiency. There are two common types of metals that props are made from: aluminum or stainless steel. At Sportsman Boats we exclusively use stainless steel props on our boats for the benefits that they provide in regards to strength, durability, and corrosion resistance.

We partner with key engine manufacturers like Yamaha and Mercury that only make this process even easier; they have their own prop experts that we can also utilize to help ensure the proper fit for our unique application and design criteria.

Pitch and Diameter: The Fundamentals

Propeller Pitch: Pitch refers to the distance a propeller would move in one complete revolution if it were moving through a solid. A good example is like a screw through wood. It’s measured in inches, and selecting the right pitch is crucial for achieving the desired balance between speed and power.

Low Pitch: Provides better acceleration and is ideal for water sports or when carrying heavy loads. However, it may result in lower top speeds and higher fuel consumption.

High Pitch: Enhances top speed and fuel efficiency by covering more distance per rotation but can reduce acceleration and may not perform well under heavy loads.

Propeller Diameter: Diameter is the total width of the propeller from tip to tip. Larger diameters generally provide more thrust and are suitable for larger, heavier boats, while smaller diameters are better for smaller, lighter boats, offering less resistance and higher speeds.

Large Diameter: Improves thrust and is beneficial for boats that need to carry heavy loads or operate in rough waters.

Small Diameter: Reduces drag, allowing for higher speeds and better fuel efficiency, but may struggle with heavier loads or rough conditions.
