A Journey of Innovation: Sportsman's 5-Year Plan to Revolutionize Family Fishing Boats

At the core of Sportsman lies an untamable focus on innovation, design, and bringing the best family fishing center console boats to life. Over the past five years, this commitment has culminated in one of the most ambitious and transformative plans the boat industry has ever seen.

The Beginning: Setting the Course

Early in 2019, the team at Sportsman embarked on the initial development stages of the Open 352. This model wasn't just another addition to the lineup; it was a cornerstone for the future of the brand. The Open 352 was designed to showcase the pinnacle of Sportsman’s capabilities while serving as a template for a new family of boats ranging from 21-feet to 35-feet. This cohesive family would share a similar design, look, amenities, and features.

The successful completion of the Open 352 ignited the 5-year plan, driven by the understanding that consumers crave fresh and innovative products. The strategy was set: release an entirely new product line each year, focusing on different boat sizes and the latest design innovations. Over these five years, Sportsman has completely redesigned all 15 of its models from the ground up.

Expanding the Fleet: New Models and Innovations

Following the incredible reception of the Open 352, work began on the Open 322 and Open 302, which were introduced in July 2021. Like their predecessor, these models were met with resounding success. For the first time, the market saw a cohesive family of 30-foot plus boats, featuring amenities such as dual side entry doors, tempered glass windshields, and advanced helm designs with top-of-the-line electronics. The inclusion of aquarium livewells and the Seakeeper gyro system further enhanced performance, fuel economy and stabilization.

From 2021 onward, Sportsman continued to introduce new models, including the Open 282, Open 262, Heritage 261, and the all-new Masters 247 and Masters 247OE. Each new release brought unique features and improvements, such as the "Sandbar mode" in the Heritage 261, designed for the ultimate family sandbar experience. The Masters 247 and its OE counterpart offered hybrid fishing experiences with an open bow layout.

In 2023, the brand redesigned the Masters 267 and Masters 267OE. By 2024, Sportsman had reimagined its best-selling models, introducing the all-new Open 232, Heritage 231, and the highly capable Open 252. This comprehensive redesign journey culminates in 2025 with the release of the Open 212 and Masters 227, marking the completion of the ambitious 5-year plan.

Building a Foundation for the Future

To achieve such a transformative plan, significant operational changes were necessary. Sportsman expanded its facility by over 125,000-sqft since the introduction of the Open 352. This expansion included a 10,000-sqft mill room housing a state-of-the-art 5-axis CNC machine, crucial for milling plugs used in boat molds. The team also grew, adding talented boat builders to support new operations and increased capacity.

Innovative manufacturing techniques and equipment were introduced, such as light RTM for fully finished, insulated lids, and vacuum infusion methods for lightweight, strong insulated boxes and livewells. Larger models, 26-feet and up, benefited from a full grid stringer design, integrating fish boxes with superior insulation and optimal Seakeeper pod placement for performance and ease of maintenance.

Throughout the 5-year period, further innovations were integrated into redesigned models. The introduction of the Seakeeper Ride system in 2023 exemplifies how Sportsman continually brings new technology to its boats. Every model now features a pocketed design for the Seakeeper Ride system. Additionally, the proprietary Sporttuun® audio system delivers high-end sound through Garmin Fusion Apollo stereos and JL Audio components.
