Discover the best products and techniques for cleaning your boat's upholstery. From mold removers to conditioning treatments, this guide provides tried-and-true recommendations for keeping your seats in top condition.
Cleaning your boats upholstery can be a frustrating and confusing task. There are so many different products, and everyone has their thoughts on what is the best.
Over the years I have learned that there is no perfect product, there are however different products for every aspect of that job. Below is a list of the products I have found to be the most affective for their desired use.
For older mold ridden and stained seats, I believe that the Mary Kate mold and mildew remover is the best product. It doesn’t require scrubbing and won’t run like other products. It is a water-based spray that is easy to apply and remove. I have also noticed it doesn’t dry out the stitching on the seats like other acid-based products. I like to follow the mold remover up with Mothers VLR (Vinyl, Leather, Rubber) Care. This product penetrates down into the upholstery, giving it a soft and not dried out feeling. It also leaves a nice shine on the product that last. Once you’ve gotten a few coats down, you will see water bead off the vinyl.
For our Si-Leather material, fill a water bowl with dawn or similar dish soap and water and use a soft sponge to clean. Si-Leather is the easiest product in the marine industry to clean, it doesn’t stain, and any mark can be simply cleaned off with soap and water. I still like to use VLR on it after I clean and dry the boat, just to add the sheen and extra step of preserving the product.
