It's that sad time of the year again, time to put away and prep your Sportsman for the winter time.

  • Follow the boat and motor manufacturer guidelines and tailor winterization to your climate by starting with the owner’s manuals.
  • Prepare all key systems during winterization: engine, bilge, fresh water system and safety gear, draining tanks and applying protective coatings.
  • Do a preseason checklist and consider professional help if needed, including trailer maintenance and battery storage, to ensure your boat stays damage free through winter.

When the warm sunny days come to an end and winter is on the horizon, it is best to start thinking about winterizing your boat. Winterizing is the act of getting your boat prepped and ready for the cold months ahead. Depending on where your boat lives is how you will winterize it, it does vary slightly from area to area. The first place to start is your owner’s manual of both your boat and motor for any manufacturer’s recommendations on winterization.

If you live in an area where snow thrives, keeping your boat out of the water in a climate-controlled storage area is the preferred way to go. This can be expensive and sometimes not possible. The second best option is to put a cover on your boat to protect it from the harsh winter environment.

Here are a few other tips & tricks for properly winterizing your boat:

Engine(s)

  • Flush the engine(s) with fresh water using the flushing port on the side of the motor.
  • Apply water resistant grease to propeller shaft and threads.
  • Wash engine down with a marine appropriate soap.
  • Apply a good coat of polish/wax to your motor.

Bilge

  • Use a marine appropriate soap to wash out any unwanted contaminates.
  • Use an anti-corrosion spray on any connection areas that may need it.

Fresh Water System/Head

  • Drain all fresh water tanks to prevent freezing.
  • Pump out any waste in holding tank/toilet.
  • A dehumidifier or moisture absorbing product to control moisture in head.

Safety Equipment

  • Remove all lifejackets and store in climate-controlled area. This will prevent mold.
  • This is a good time to remove and check all fire extinguisher/flares etc.

Trailer

  • This is a good time to make sure your trailer is greased. (Check your trailer manufacture's recommendations).
  • Check any electrical wires for bad spots.
  • Spray anti-corrosion spray on hitch and wiring.

Out of Water Storage

  • Wash off any unwanted residue from hull.
  • Wax Hull.
  • Open seacocks to allow any water to drain.
  • Make sure batteries are stored in the off position.

By following these simple guidelines your boat will stay damage-free and clean through the harsh winter months. Make sure you refer to your owner’s manuals for exact treatments for your boat and motor. If you need assistance or have further questions on how to properly care for your boat in the winter, reach out to your local Sportsman dealer.
