  • Proximity to the harbor versus downtown amenities affects travel time and maneuvering; consider what matters most to you.
  • Check ramp features before launching; note lane count width parking and obstacles such as pilings trees or no wake zones.

Now that you’ve bought your new Sportsman boat, finding the best ramp that meets your needs can be a challenge, as many variables come into play. For instance, if you have a larger model, like the 282 or larger, ample parking and ramp depth are critical factors. You don’t want to face issues at low tide when pulling your boat out or risk damaging your trailer at mid-tide. Let’s dive into a few of our favorite ramps in the Charleston area.

1. W.O. Thomas, Jr. Boat Landing (Leeds Landing)

template marking.

Location: Off Exit 526
This is a very large ramp suitable for all vessel sizes. Its wide, three-lane ramp is deep enough to launch an Open 352 even at low tide. With ample parking, there's no concern about space. While it’s easily accessible from I-526, its location further up the Ashley River means a longer commute to Charleston.

Pros:

  • Spacious parking and wide ramp
  • Deep enough for larger boats, even at low tide
  • Minimal obstruction from trees

Cons:

  • Further from downtown Charleston
  • Longer travel time to the action

2. Remley’s Point Boat Landing

template marking.

Location: Base of the Ravenel Bridge, Wando River
Remley’s Point offers a prime location with easy access to the Wando River and Charleston Harbor. Its three-lane ramp and ample parking make it a popular choice. However, wave break pilings at the outer edge can make maneuvering challenging on busy days. Low-hanging trees in the residential area can also be a concern for boats with radar or T-tops.

Pros:

  • Prime location near Charleston Harbor
  • Wide, three-lane ramp
  • Ample parking

Cons:

  • Wave break pilings can complicate maneuvering
  • Low-hanging trees and residential obstacles

3. Shem Creek Landing

template marking.

Location: Near Coleman Boulevard
Shem Creek Landing is perfect for easy access to the harbor and nearby restaurants. However, parking is very limited, and navigating tight side roads with larger boats can be tricky. Despite these challenges, its proximity to popular destinations makes it a top choice.

Pros:

  • Quick access to the harbor
  • Close to restaurants and attractions

Cons:

  • Limited and crowded parking
  • Tight streets for maneuvering
  • Difficult for larger boats

4. Wappoo Creek Boat Landing

template marking.

Location: West Ashley / James Island
Situated in a no-wake zone, Wappoo Creek offers a calm environment for launching boats. While the strong creek currents require caution, the location is quiet and convenient for residents in the area. Parking wraps around the base of the bridge, making it an accessible option.

Pros:

  • Reduced wave concerns in a no-wake zone
  • Quiet location, less crowded
  • Convenient for West Ashley and James Island residents

Cons:

  • Strong current in the creek
  • Not as close to Charleston’s main waterways

5. Cypress Gardens Boat Landing

template marking.

Location: Moncks Corner, Cooper River
Recently renovated, Cypress Gardens offers ample parking and dual ramps, accommodating all boat sizes, including large Sportsman models. While it’s a bit of a drive from downtown Charleston, the peaceful scenery and easy launching make it worthwhile.

Pros:

  • Newly repaved with plenty of parking
  • Scenic and peaceful surroundings
  • Suitable for large Sportsman models

Cons:

  • A bit far from downtown Charleston
  • Not close to main Charleston waterways

Conclusion: Finding the Right Ramp for Your Sportsman

Choosing the best boat ramp depends on your needs, whether that’s access to the harbor, ample parking, or a peaceful launch spot. Each of these ramps has unique advantages and considerations, so take your boat size, parking needs, and desired location into account. Tight lines, and happy boating!
