If you've spent any time shopping for a new Sportsman, you've probably run into two names that sound like they should be the same thing: Seakeeper and Seakeeper Ride.

We get asked about the difference almost every week at the dock, in the DMs, and at boat shows:

• "Do I need the gyro if I already have Ride?"
• "Isn't Ride basically the gyro without the tank?"
• "This has Seakeeper, right?"

Fair questions. But the honest answer is that these two systems aren't competing with each other at all. They're solving two completely different motion problems, and on a lot of our boats, they're working side by side to cover the whole ride, from sitting still on the sandbar to running wide open across a chop.

Two Different Jobs


Seakeeper Gyro

Seakeeper (the gyro) is built for when your boat isn't going anywhere. Drifting over a reef, sitting at anchor, bottom fishing, hanging out at the sandbar: that's where a traditional gyro earns its keep.

Inside that sealed sphere, a flywheel spins at high speed, and through basic gyroscopic physics, it fights back against side-to-side roll. Seakeeper's own numbers put that at up to 95% roll reduction at rest and at slow speeds.

If you've ever had a boat rock you (or your less sea-legged guests) while anchored up, you know exactly why this matters.

Seakeeper Ride

Seakeeper Ride is a completely different animal, and it's built for the opposite scenario: underway.

Instead of a spinning mass inside the hull, Ride uses fast-reacting blades mounted on the transom that make thousands of micro-adjustments per second based on real-time motion data.

It's constantly reading how the boat is pitching, rolling, and yawing as you run across a chop or through a following sea, and correcting for it on the fly.

Seakeeper rates Ride at up to 70% reduction in pitch, roll, and yaw at cruising speed. It also replaces traditional trim tabs, so you're gaining stabilization without giving up transom space or adding drag-heavy hardware.
