  • Follow the official break in duration of about 10 hours for Mercury and Yamaha, vary RPMs and avoid sustained high throttle to help seat rings and ensure proper lubrication.
  • Mercury break in: avoid sustained WOT in the first 10 hours, keep RPM under 3,500 for the first two hours, then gradually increase while trimming to promote lubrication.
  • Yamaha break in: about 10 hours with staged RPM targets; hour 1 under 2,000, hour 2 up to 3,000 and hours 2 to 10 at three quarters throttle or less with occasional brief full throttle.

When purchasing a new Sportsman boat equipped with either a Mercury or Yamaha outboard engine, following the proper break-in procedures is essential to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Both Mercury and Yamaha emphasize the importance of this process during the first hours of operation, as it sets the foundation for your engine’s future health.

Mercury Outboards recommend a 10-hour break-in period for their engines. For the first two hours, it’s crucial to avoid extended periods of wide-open throttle (WOT) and instead vary the RPMs, keeping the engine below 3,500 RPM. After two hours, you can begin to increase the throttle gradually, but sustained WOT should still be avoided until after the 10-hour mark. Additionally, trimming the engine up and down during this time can help ensure proper lubrication of all components.

Yamaha Outboards suggest a break-in period of about 10 hours but divide the process into more detailed segments. For the first hour, run the engine at varying speeds, staying below 2,000 RPM. During the second hour, you can increase speed up to 3,000 RPM, again with varying throttle inputs. Between hours 2 and 10, it is recommended to operate the boat at three-quarters throttle or less, occasionally increasing to full throttle for brief periods but avoiding continuous full-throttle operation.

Properly breaking in your outboard not only helps to seat the piston rings but also ensures that the engine components are well-lubricated and function smoothly. Adhering to these guidelines from both Mercury and Yamaha will give your Sportsman boat the reliable performance it’s built for and prolong the life of your outboard.

Remember, Maintenance Matters and taking care of your outboard with proper break-in procedures and maintenance throughout the life of your boat and outboard will keep you enjoying your boat for many years to come.

Head to your local Sportsman dealer for all of your maintenance needs and we look forward to seeing you on the water!
