What is a Side Entry Door?

A side entry door, sometimes called a boarding door, is a side-mounted access door built into the hull side of a boat that allows passengers to enter and exit more easily from docks, floating platforms or the water. Once considered a feature found mostly on larger yachts, side entry doors have become increasingly popular on modern center consoles because of how much convenience and functionality they add to everyday boating.

All Sportsman Boats Open and Heritage models 26 feet and larger come standard with dual side entry doors, giving owners easier access while also improving safety and versatility on the water.

Traditionally, boarding a center console often meant climbing over the gunwale or stepping across the bow from a dock. While functional, those methods can become more difficult for children, older passengers or anyone carrying gear. A side entry door creates a much more natural and secure boarding point closer to dock height.

One of the biggest advantages of a side entry door is convenience at the dock. Floating docks rarely line up perfectly with the deck height of a boat, especially as tides change throughout the day. A side entry door helps reduce awkward stepping and makes getting on and off the boat significantly easier for both passengers and crew.

The feature becomes even more valuable when swimming, sandbar hopping or diving. Instead of climbing over the side of the boat, passengers can re-enter through the door using an integrated ladder system on many models. This creates a more comfortable and safer experience, especially for children or anyone less mobile.

For anglers, side entry doors also improve functionality while fishing. On larger center consoles, the opening provides another access point around the boat and can make handling larger fish easier depending on the situation.

On the Heritage 321, the dual side entry doors open forward and sit flush against the inside gunwale rather than swinging aft. This design helps maximize cockpit space and prevents the doors from interfering with the aft seating layout while open.

Bringing coolers, bags, pets or water toys aboard becomes much easier compared to lifting everything over the side of the boat. It is one of those features many owners quickly realize they use constantly once they have it.
